27 Sep Using Visualisation to Achieve Your Goal
How Visualisation Applied During Hypnosis Can Prevent Self-Sabotage and Help You Achieve Your Goal
One of the factors that makes hypnotherapy so powerful in effecting positive change is that during hypnosis, the subconscious mind can’t differentiate between what’s real and what’s imagined.
This is important because the mental blocks, nerves and self-doubts which cause self-sabotage and prevent us from achieving our goals, come from the subconscious part of the mind.
So, guided visualisation of goal achievement applied during hypnosis can help override inner blocks and doubts, prevent self-sabotage and allow us to fulfill our potential.
At this point we need a quick reality check. For hypnotic visualisation to work, the goal being visualised needs to be realistic and achievable otherwise the subconscious mind will reject it. If you are out of shape and haven’t trained, it’s unlikely that you’ll run a sub 3 hour marathon no matter how much visualising you do.
But, if you have done the hard work and the practice and know deep down that logically your goal is attainable, then hypnotic visualisation can help make it a reality.
Passing an exam, achieving a personal best time, hitting a golf ball across the lake, swimming under water, conversing in a foreign language, making a best man’s speech – there are so many examples that I have encountered where the only thing stopping the person actually doing it was their own self-doubt.
One further caveat. If the visualisation process just covers the ‘glory moment’ it probably won’t work. To be effective, it needs to focus on overcoming the problems and situations that trigger doubts and promote self-sabotage. For example, one client had failed her driving test 5 times. She was a good, safe and conscientious driver, the sort of person we need on our roads. Her negative trigger point, was a bump in the road on the test route which prompted her to doubt herself and start making mistakes. So, during the hypnotic visualisation process we focussed on successfully negotiating this situation and staying calm. It worked and she passed.
